Discover landscape roses

Roses are among the best-loved flowers, but landscape roses are less familiar to some gardeners. This article, first written in May, takes a closer look at the roses grown for use in gardens rather than cut bouquets.

Beyond the roses given as bouquets, there are many varieties suited to hedges, beds, borders and broad areas of colour.

Rose bushes have a long history in vineyards, where they were traditionally planted at the ends of rows. In some circumstances they provided an early sign of problems affecting the vines, as well as adding colour.

This traditional role helped growers notice changes and decide when closer inspection was needed.

Modern vineyard management uses more precise monitoring, but roses remain a familiar sight, particularly where growers value traditional planting practices.

Landscape roses have been selected for a different purpose: creating attractive, robust planting in hedges, beds, borders and colourful garden displays.

Some varieties can also form low barriers or substantial hedges, reaching around a metre and a half depending on the cultivar and growing conditions.

At our nursery, we grow Meilland® landscape roses, from a rose breeder known internationally for its varieties.

What does “landscape rose” mean?

Landscape roses are selected for generous flowering, repeat blooms and resilience, with relatively modest maintenance needs.

Meilland landscape roses can be vigorous, repeat-flowering plants. Their resilience makes them a useful choice for gardeners who are starting out or prefer less demanding planting.

They can also suit holiday-home gardens, provided their basic watering, soil and seasonal care requirements are met.

Depending on the variety and local conditions, they can flower generously from May or June until the first frosts.
